Fuuta sent me to talk to you. He says you have a workshop and are good at crafting.

[ fuuta also pretty explicitly said he didn't know if broca makes weapons at all, but that's beside the point! ]

Workshop? Not really... I've gone some tools, and a couple of people I know let me use their bigger rooms to work out of. I'm not bad at crafting though.

[ Admittedly with his large suite, one of Fuuta's rooms does now house a decent work space for Broca. ]

You were looking to have something made?

I asked if he knew anyone who can make swords, but I know that's a long shot.

What do you make?

Not swords.

[ A pretty concise answer to the question, but to expand... ]

I've made weapons, but ones that require more hardware to them. Something with motorized components of some sort.

Mostly I work with mechanical things, or make furniture, sometimes handicrafts. ]

[ blade wouldn't exactly consider himself a master of subtlety, but the receipt of a room number does seem quite a bit like an invitation, so he sends back the evergreen "👍🏻" and not that long after, makes his way up to the seventh floor. it's not a long trip at least, being as blade is situated on the sixth, although he ordinarily avoids this floor for unrelated reasons...

fortunately, those reasons are not out and about today, which means blade makes it unscathed to the room number in the text. he knocks, then steps back, glancing up and down the hall as he waits for an answer. ]

[ Proper and enthusiastic invitations aren't exactly Broca's thing, so a person who can understand an invitation like that with little preamble from him just makes his life all the easier. The thumbs up was an assumed response to what he also assumed was a clear invitation as far as he was concerned.

Which means in the time that Blade has been making his way up, Broca has been laying out what products he has stashed in his room to view. Several of his creatures are in Fuuta's room, the other man having allowed him one of his (many) free rooms to use as a workspace, but he feels bad leaving completed projects up there.

The close proximity means he's not done pulling things out and arranging them by the time he hears the knock. His ears twitch in surprise as he goes to pull the door open, frowning thoughtfully as he nods his head towards the room, offering Blade a silent invite in. ]

You're fast. I'm not done pulling everything out.

[ Some things though. A prototype of the gauntlet he was helping create for Wriothesley is probably the most interesting, since it's the most weapon-y of the things he has, though he has some strange looking modified tools as well. Everything else he's pulled out seems to be everyday use items: a solid and simple metal stool, a metal rack, and a strangely complicated toolbox he built to haul those modified tools around in. ]

Most of the rest is woodworking things though...

[ Which seem even further from swords than what he's got here. ]

[ at first glance, as blade steps inside, it's clear that there's not very much in broca's room that has the obvious shape of a weapon. that's fine—not disappointing, blade was adequately prepared for the fact that broca is no weaponsmith. ]

I'm one floor down. [ the explanation for him being fast. ] I can wait if you need.

[ outside, or in the doorway, or whatever. contrary to his words, though, blade takes one step further in, examining the items that are already visible. he lingers most on the gauntlet prototype and the toolbox, as they seem to display the broadest swathe of broca's skillset.

he glances up again at the mention of woodworking, tilts his head slightly in thought. on its face, woodworking is quite different from swordsmithing, but both require patience and a steady hand. ]

...Are you good? At woodworking.

[ He was already here, so Broca wasn't about to make him wait anyway. He barely reacts to Blade deciding to enter regardless, shaking his head just once as he dismisses the need for it anyway. There's no real point to making him stand outside while Broca pulls out all of his creations, because he's not all that interested in showmanship anyway.

Something either works and is sturdy and good, or it doesn't. It's a simple as that.

He'll stand back instead, arms crossed as he lets Blade examine what he put out. None of it is the woodworking, but he can show him that as well. He has several pieces around his room that he made as well. After all, it's not like he doesn't have plenty of free time here at the resort.

The question gives him pause though, because Broca has never been a big bragger, but he's also always been fairly honest. This means that he's actually very genuinely assessing the quality of his work right now to decide how best to answer though. ]

Yeah. It's simple stuff I make, but it's good.

Mm.

[ the fact that broca considers the question thoroughly and then answers in the affirmative is enough to elevate blade's opinion of him, for whatever that's worth after so short an acquaintance. a passable craftsman might downplay their own talent or, conversely, over-confidently inflate it, but the way broca assess his own skill rings true enough to blade.

he can't immediately see any of the woodcraft from where he's standing, but that doesn't seem to change blade's opinion. for a moment he considers asking broca whether he's interested in learning smithing, but blade's grasp on his own sanity is still a little too tenuous to broach that particular subject. still, he files it away—as best someone like him is able, anyway—for future consideration. ]

Do you work on commission?

[ Given the abundance of free time that Broca finds himself with here, a new hobby wouldn't be unwelcome, though his room is unfit for something along those lines. Most of what he does can be created with handheld tools, and given he tended to work mostly from his workbench in his dorm room home, sacrificing convenience of larger tools like table saws for the privacy his room afforded him, he's been making do just fine here.

He'd probably need to convert another room in Fuuta's oversized suite for a full smith, though for the things he already makes... ]

You don't need to commission me. If it's something I can actually make, then I'll do it for free.

[ Again, that abundance of free time sure does start to grow tedious after awhile. If someone's giving him something to focus on, all the better for him. That's payment enough. ]

[ another quiet nod at that. blade doesn't argue the point—if broca doesn't want to accept money for his craft, who is blade to convince him otherwise?

after a moment his brow furrows as he considers his request. ]

The training swords in Talon are terrible, [ is what blade eventually settles on. he doesn't need to explain his whole history as a swordsman in order to make his ask, and given how taciturn broca seems, blade doubts he'd care to hear the whole thing anyway. ] I'm looking to have something heavier made. It doesn't have to cut the way a sword would, it just needs to feel right.

[ all the better to train himself with, my dear. or something. ]

[ A training sword, huh? Broca pauses to consider it for a moment. He isn't a sword user himself, and none of his close friends have ever bothered with bladed weapons either, so even practice swords haven't been much use to them. Still, he has seen them before, and if he's not looking for something that Broca would struggle to make without a proper forge, then... ]

I'd need to look at one of the ones they have, then I need to know how heavy you want it to be, but I think I could do it.

[ And if he doesn't get it right the first time, trying again and again will give him an ongoing project. ]

[ it's not entirely a surprise that broca agrees. after all, blade knows his type, interested in experimentation and skill development almost more than anything else—he knows that type because he was that type once, in a different medium. ]

Do you need a demonstration from me?

[ whether to see how blade wields the swords, or so he can measure one with his grip and tell broca to make it twice as heavy... or whatever. blade is sure broca would be able to manage on his own, but it seems right to offer. ]

[ He's not so good at weapon crafting that he could see a man wielding his weapon and be able to glean a ton of information from that, but he might be able to get a little. He'd certainly be able to see what motions are make, and could take a pretty educated guess on how the weight needs to be distributed, so... ]

Yeah. If you've got time.

[ He'd need Blade to show him the practice swords and tell Broca how much more he wants them to weigh in the first place, so a little demo seems easy to work into all that. ]
